There was a lot of celebration among the representatives of the Eichendorff Gymnasium in Bamberg: with their work wir 2 (we 2), the students won first place in the competition "Young People Interpret Art," which includes the prize money of 5,000 Euros. The prominent jury of the Deutsche Bank Foundation's Youth Art Prize, which includes artists Abraham David Christian and Markus Lüpertz as well as the ad agency director Coordt von Mannstein, the director of the Küppersmühle Museum (MKM) Walter Smerling, and the collector Sylvia Ströher, was impressed by the high quality of the competing works.
In 2008, twenty schools from all over Germany took part in the competition. At the MKM in Duisburg, students were able to experience works of art in the original and to discuss and analyze them; accompanied by art instructors, they were encouraged to translate their impressions into a work of art of their own. The competition, made possible by the Deutsche Bank Foundation in cooperation with the Küppersmühle Museum für Moderne Kunst and the city of Duisburg, is characterized by an intensive process of exploring contemporary art. The students' own creative thinking is brought to bear in developing individual works that relate to contemporary works of art. The MKM is showing all entries to the competition in an exhibition that runs through February 8, 2009.
