Imi Knoebel has consistently explored the possibilities of nonfigurative art more than any other contemporary German artist. The development of his abstract work has been long discussed in connection with Kazimir Malevich. Imi Knoebel – Fishing. Deutsche Bank Collection and New Works, the current exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, views the work of the artist (born in 1940) from a new perspective – Knoebel’s engagement with Piet Mondrian’s artistic vocabulary. The Gemeentemuseum has the world’s leading collection of works by the Dutch Painter, whose dynamic compositions in the primary colors red, blue and yellow had a strong impact on Knoebel. Around 100 of his paintings, drawings, collages and photographic works from the Deutsche Bank Collection form the basis of the show. They are supplemented by current works that the artist provided for Fishing.
The Deutsche Bank Collection is closely connected with Knoebel. For more than 25 years the bank has continuously acquired works by the Düsseldorf-based artist. It now possesses more than 1,000 sheets. In 2009, the Deutsche Guggenheim devoted a two-part exhibition to the Beuys student. New works were shown under the title ICH NICHT, and subsequently ENDUROS presented a retrospective of works on paper by the artist executed from 1968 to 2005. The works from the corporate collection bring together opposing qualities: geometry and gesture, system and chance. Knoebel’s early investigation of experimental forms and materials, including the anti-corrosion paint Mennige, "immaterial" light projections, and his gestural-informal abstractions is well documented. In the light of "New Abstraction," the younger generation’s return to abstract art in the 1960s and 70s, Knoebel’s oeuvre has a special topicality.
